Dav Pilkey was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia as a child. Dav was so disruptive to the classroom that his teacher had to make him sit in the hallway every day. Fortunately, Dav loved drawing and writing stories. He began spending his time in the hallway creating his own comics. This is where Dog Man and Captain Underpants appeared. A teacher he met during his university years encouraged Dav to draw and write. She won an international competition in 1986. As a result, his first book, World War Won, was published. He won the California Young Reader Medal in 1998 with his book Dog Breath, published in 1994. Then, in 1997, he received the Caldecott Honor Award for The Paperboy. Published in 2002, The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby - one of the Captain Underpants characters - reached sixth place on USA Today's best books list for both adults and children, and was also on the New York Times best list. Later released - Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future The Adventures of Uk and Gluk and Super Diaper Baby 2: Attack of the Toilet Burglars - made it to USA Today's best list. The unorthodox style of these comics was intended to encourage suppressed creativity in children. Pilkey's stories have semi-autobiographical features.
